It feels like no matter what I do, when my sites work in IE7/IE8/Firefox/Safari/Chrome/Opera IE6 has to fuck it all up.

I know its not good practice to think ‘fuck it’, but I’m seriously annoyed with it, as its wasting my time editing my CSS files for ages trying to get everything looking good, and on the off chance it works in IE6, it doesn’t on the other browsers. So I’m considering implementing a warning/script that re-directs the user who’s using IE6 to the download page for IE8 on my sites.

What does everyone else do? Have you given up designing for IE6 or is it worth the extra hours/days to make everything work?

I have to because that’s still 20-25% of visitors for me. It does take a bit of extra time, sometimes a lot, but starting with a good css reset like and occasionally using an IE6 CSS file to override a few things makes it not quite so bad.

At least for me once you make it through a couple decent sized sites fixing the bugs for IE6 you learn them, and pick up on them much quicker in the future, although it will obviously be less and less useful as time goes on. Doesn’t help find extrememly specific problems, but someone post a link to this the other day which is a good collection: if you didn’t already see it

Unless I’m putting together something static for a client (like a non-interactive corporate site), I generally don’t code for IE6 anymore. Especially not if I’m doing something CSS/JS intensive that IE6 doesn’t support, and the site can’t function without (like an interactive game or something).

The browser is far beyond its lifespan and needs to be upgraded, but people won’t upgrade unless given a reason to. Give them their reason, if you are given the opportunity.

Yes, I’m getting used to the bugs, and subconsciously avoid them. Last few websites I’ve worked on have had hardly any problems.

You can still make great looking sites that are compatible with IE6 … not making your site work cleanly in IE6 is like throwing away a third of your visitors

I see the point of mentioning ns1.1 as outdated technology went clear above your head. When you can find another software development sector that actively optimizes its products to 8 year old hardware or software, let me know. Unless you’ve already figured out how to run DX10 games on max-settings with a GeForce 3 (which, like IE6, came out in 2001).

I’m unsurprised that you’re having difficulty wrapping your head around "throwing away customers." Before you post a suitably smug reply about how you’re scraping every last adsense dollar off those IE6 visitors, try to remember that there are actually people who code to do something new and original, in which "profit" comes in a far second, if at all.

you are comparing apples and oranges, yes ie 6 is outdated, it is still being used, where as netscape is not, and it is not that hard to make a site work on ie6, but what you are now comparing it now too, you might as well compare a vw bug and a lambo, video gaming and internet browsers are not even close

and everyone in here knows I am not an affliate marketer like most in here, I design sites for clients, small business and what not, so i do design for all users to visit, so my clients are not pushing away potential customers or users

I’m also pleased that you drew on your extensive experience coding generally static sites (and, I bet, using third party backend frameworks) and tried to apply it as you being creative. But clearly I’m talking out my ass, why don’t you prove your intellect even further by elaborating on the last time you actually encountered a situation where you implemented a new idea using technology that IE6 doesn’t support. Your small-business development acumen has proven you to be the internet’s foremost authority on new development software, you have probably overcome hurdles that I have not even DREAMED of in my simple, ignorant existence.

I always do.. it’s embarrassing when an ie6 user tells me everything is all jacked up looking, gives the appearance that I don’t know what I’m doing.. plus it’s not usually THAT hard to get it all patched up..

most forum software will work in most browsers, so there is not much you have to do with a forum on that aspect
