don’t xrumer a real site is my advice. just write a couple articles and paste them all over the web in all different formats. its such a low ranking keyword you don’t need to delve into all this link wheel shit unless its a really popular city or Great Britain

If the site is more of a static/informative site… no, not necessarily. Google knows the difference.

Here’s your real problem. Each box in the linkwheel is a 300 -500 unique article about your subject (dentistry). Unless you have some good spinning software, you’re looking at writing 20 articles. That’s 15 hours of just writing!

1. It can take weeks for Google to even discover your linkwheel. Do you have a strategy to get its immediate attention?
2. One linkwheel alone might not be enough.
3. The dentist’s website itself may need a few hours of on-page adjustments so it can compete.

The OP can certainly do this himself with enough research, trial and error, etc.

both domains? Your doc’s site and the one you are trying to promo? It wouldn’t make a difference. I have the exact same situation, I am hosting the site I designed for them and the promo site on rackspace (same IP).

A round of social bookmarks, article, and a solid link or two should probably be good enough for a geo phrase like that. Like others mentioned, I wouldn’t use Xrumer for a legit business site.

I’d stick to using Xrumer-like tools on doorway sites.

Nb. My host already set reverse dns too like this before, so i choose 1.1.1.3 for the static/dedicated ip for domain.com above, no problem with the reverse dns right?

that is all you have to do…you might experience 24-48 hour delay because of the IP change, since it needs to propagate.

try accessing the IP via a proxy and it should work

Have you updated your DNS to point to the new IP?

If your cPanel server is handling the DNS you wouldn’t need to do this but I’m guessing it doesn’t.

It makes life easier if its delimited somehow. I mostly use pipes "|", since you tend to have commas in your files. Tabs would work fine. The extension doesn’t necessarily matter, as long as its a readable text document and not binary.

with awk im able to use print $1 or print $2 to differentiate between the fields for parsing. im inserting these into an oracle database and parsing each of the fields into its column in the record.

whats making this difficult is that i have to work directly with the log file. id like to use sql loader instead of manually inserting with sqlplus in a do while loop within my unix script.

You could do it with PHP. PHP does have functions for file management.

I have not tested this, as i am at work, but this should work. You pretty much open up the file and read it line by line and insert the data into the table.

mysql? if so look for a program called sqlyog you can import all sorts of data formats including csv comma delimited stuff.

Haha wish it was mysql. Sorry should have specified the database is oracle 11g and the log files are from siebel and obiee. There could be more columns depending on the log file I pull. However they are pretty much all the same format of tab delimited. The related field columns also aren’t all exactly the same distance from the beginning of the line. For example the 2nd field may start 20 characters over every time except for a few records that are 21 characters over. This doesn’t seem to bother awk in unix.

The script i posted would work for 4 columns. will they always have a header line? If so, you could either find some import software that oracle offers to do it, or write a script that checks the header lines and maybe files it accordingly? I have something like that working on one of our windoze servers here. It steps through all the files in a directory and finds the output that contains a certain header then imports into the respective table. Its been ages since i’ve messed with it.

The url is different than the one you have. I havent really dealt with youtube embedded stuff outside of just copying what they have there :shrug: I embeded the videos on a test html page and they show up fine. I replaced your links in with the one from above and the video showed up. The link you get from youtube is a webpage with their video embedded on it. You might need the parameters that are after the link ("?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"). Looking at the 2 links, they both have that behind them. Might just be a deal of just appending " ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" to the end of your link code they submit. See Below.

There are a few ways you can tackle this.

1. Have your users submit the embeded link from Youtube. This would give you the exact Link. Not quite user friendly, but would work. This would work with your current code.
2. Have them submit the video number that comes after the v= in the address (i.e. r18AWC4j-EE). This would be ideal, easy to get for the user and you can just use the number to pull and insert into the embeded link in your code. [ideal]

3. Take what they submitted ripout what comes after the v= on the link and drop that into a new link. This is just a cheesy way to do it. It just finds the position of v= and gets everything after it(which would work unless there’s more crap behind it). Now this could be updated a little to look through the string and grab everything after the v= and stop when it gets to a "&" or "&amp;". That could work.

You could add a counter and have it count from 0 to 2 (3 columns). When the counter is 0, it drops a <tr> in teh code. Then it drops the <td> data</td> until the counter gets to 2, then it drops the </tr> to close the row.

ya, I actually worked on something similar earlier and got it working. Then I jumped into pagination and have been fucking with that for 3 hours

Found a tutorial pagination class.php to walk through and got it working, but the videos stopped showing up which I narrowed down to being a class function being used in the query, but I’m over it for tonight!

i figured it out, it was a wordpress error

for example a link could have an onclick="function()" to fire the function(). I see a lot of modern websites don’t put the events in the element’s tags though. I have a pretty good (like 90%) idea of how to do all this. But I want to learn to do it the proper way moving forward.

Are these developers attaching every function the elements from a javascript file? Any insight is appreciated!

I’m a strong believer that all javascript should be developed unobtrusively. Benefits of this are pretty obvious–graceful degradation, and plenty of other benefits depending on the situation.

Coding javascript unobtrusively will allow separation between your presentation and your behavior, thus requiring your javascript code be held in an external file.

A major problem with javascript these days is really how people perceive it. It had very poor support of the DOM API , so developers were forced to utilize event handling by HTML events applied to elements. Today, that’s not so much of an issue, even in older browsers like IE6. There will be some quirks, but utilizing a framework would weed most of them out, and DOM has come quite a bit of ways.

Do you know of anywhere to see samples of this done properly? Just looking for a base to get me going.

What kingtoad said. Unubtrusive javascript is the best way to go.

You do this by setting up event listeners

So, onclick="function()" would be:

$(‘#target’).click(function() {
alert(‘Handler for .click() called.’);
});

Thats a specific example if you are using the jQuery library but the idea transfers.

If you wanted to do this using jQuery here is a simple example from the api docs.

I’d suggest before diving into a framework (like jQuery) to be able to write and manipulate objects and the DOM tree with DOM. This is a great book for individuals who are beginning javascript. It teaches javascript from a complete unobtrusive point of view. When finished with the book, you’ll be able to accomplish anything you need to in DOM. From there, you can graduate yourself to jQuery.

Josh wrote a super small framework for handling some DOM functions, including attaching events. It’s worth checking out.

So if they don’t have Javascript, they have it disabled, the JS doesn’t load, etc, the link still works. If they do have Javascript functioning, it’ll instead open in a colorbox.
