My buddy is a dentist in my town and went to seminar trying to convince them to pay $2,000 to this service to get them number 1 ranked on google when you type in "dentist in goodlettsville, TN." They made claims that they would submit articles for him to generators and post on forums and message boards backlinks to drastically boost his ranking.

They threw out numbers like 20 new clients a month just off google searches for what they are doing. And as a dentist that could be huge and pay off the $2,000 in no time. However shit wouldn’t paying $50 to Xrumer do the same thing for his unknown dentist office website?

Thanks OT, trying to help a brotha out

			don’t xrumer a real site is my advice. just write a couple articles and paste them all over the web in all different formats. its such a low ranking keyword you don’t need to delve into all this link wheel shit unless its a really popular city or Great Britain

ya i wouldn’t bother with the xrumer.. just do articles, backlinks, and other bum marketing methods..should be easy to rank.

The main reason I ask is is saying $50 for all the links and most backlink sites are $100 per 100 backlinks.

I think it would be awesome if he could just dominate the online market because he might hook me up with free tickets to the predators games all season in the box with them

Would you say just purchase the backlinks from someone or xrumer?

Neither.

That should be incredibly easy to rank for. In fact, I’d be willing to wager you could do it with on page SEO and only a couple of back links.

Keep in mind that building 15 back links per day means you’ll have to do that daily for the most part(not always the case, but usually).

			Your main competitor only has 7 back links according to Google.

Around 2500 according to MajesticSEO… look to be from article submissions, etc.

Shouldn’t be too hard to achieve.. at all..

			So if there are 5 major things that he treats example: root canal, bruxism, vaginal pain, etc would making 20 backlinks for each key word be the best bet or just making them all the same? Also do you have to continually maintain backlinks or else you get penalized?

Thx bros

Thx bros

If the site has dynamic content(read: blog, tube site, etc etc).. yes, you have to maintain the back links/keep adding more.

If the site is more of a static/informative site… no, not necessarily. Google knows the difference.

You can accomplish a lot with on page SEO with the more static-type sites, then perhaps buying a hard link on your local paper’s web site for example.

			Your friend is getting hosed.

I did a search for dentist in Goodlettsville TN and found:

The top spot is a SuperPages listing (easy to outrank a directory).

Second is PR2 8 yrs. old, some links (beatable).

Third…beatable.

Fourth…beatable.

Do not XRummer his site or buy any direct links to his site.

You have to build other websites throughout that link to his site. Then bomb THOSE satellite sites w/ Xrummer and what have you.

PM me about this if you get a chance.

			So this link wheel you sent me vander seems pretty cool. I can definitely see how these can be infinitely expanded to promote rankings. Even in small niche markets you think they are necessary instead of just getting backlinks?

Yes, because it protects your site from getting delisted.

If you buy the wrong backlink package, you can get seriously penalized by Google.

			lol, I don’t think I could personally use xrumer to it’s full extent, would I be best off using one of these xrumer services than trying to attempt it myself again? Glad I didn’t pay the $500 for it D:

			I can’t believe there isn’t successful application services for this out there. Having to pay someone $100 a month to maintain seems like the only option and that super sucks for small businesses. Just another fee that is $100 a month…

No existing computer program can track the competition automatically, then build inbound links automatically to keep the customer on page 1.

If there was, it would make $ billions.

			I could care less about the tracking of the competition part, just the create dummy pages in the link wheel and then build inbound links automatically part.

			Senuke ($127/mo.) and Scrapebox ($97) will do this.

Wouldn’t people be doing this to their competitors to penalize them, then?

			wow this thread blew up since I last read it .. but I doubt you need to buy any services for this site… It’s definitely possible to rank. If you want to spend money on it, build a link wheel, build out some web 2.0 properties, then buy an xrumer service and xrumer the linkwheel/web2.0 properties. never xrumer the money site, especially a new domain. is where i do all my xrumer stuff

I believe this does happen. The site comes back in a few weeks…stronger than ever.

It’s not something you would want to purposely do to your own site. Or ever get caught doing to a competitors.

This but Im a newb

			How can we find an example of one of these link wheel’s in action? I’m wanting to replicate it myself and if I can’t then I will have to pay Vandeweghe $200 to do it for me.

So for example if you have the "money page" having all of these new sites linking to it how in depth are you going with these other sites?

So for example one of the link wheel’s out there (there are tons of them) but says make a wordpress page that points to the money page and blogger. Well is it linked with just a keyword anchor texted on the site somewhere? So then we would have WordPress backlinking to the new blogger page and money page.

I would just love to see someone link their money page and also their links to their wordpress, blogger, quizilla, weebly page etc so that I can get the idea.

That’s a pretty good diagram.  Here’s another:

Yes, the items in the linkwheel are connected with anchor text links.

Here’s your real problem. Each box in the linkwheel is a 300 -500 unique article about your subject (dentistry). Unless you have some good spinning software, you’re looking at writing 20 articles. That’s 15 hours of just writing!

More problems:

1. It can take weeks for Google to even discover your linkwheel. Do you have a strategy to get its immediate attention?
2. One linkwheel alone might not be enough.
3. The dentist’s website itself may need a few hours of on-page adjustments so it can compete.

SEO, fortunately for people who do it for a living, is not a diy project.

that is all you have to do…you might experience 24-48 hour delay because of the IP change, since it needs to propagate.

			Have you updated your DNS to point to the new IP?

If your cPanel server is handling the DNS you wouldn’t need to do this but I’m guessing it doesn’t.

			It makes life easier if its delimited somehow. I mostly use pipes "|", since you tend to have commas in your files. Tabs would work fine. The extension doesn’t necessarily matter, as long as its a readable text document and not binary.

thanks sabre. does it recognize fields like awk in unix scripting?

my log file kind of looks like this

serverlog     4    hello          blahblahblah
serverlog     4    goodbye     dfdfdfdfdf
objerror       0    hrm           dfdfdfdff

with awk im able to use print $1 or print $2 to differentiate between the fields for parsing. im inserting these into an oracle database and parsing each of the fields into its column in the record.

whats making this difficult is that i have to work directly with the log file. id like to use sql loader instead of manually inserting with sqlplus in a do while loop within my unix script.

			You could do it with PHP. PHP does have functions for file management.

I have not tested this, as i am at work, but this should work. You pretty much open up the file and read it line by line and insert the data into the table.

/*
DB Connection info goes here */

    $filename="log.txt"

     $handle = fopen("$filename", "r");

     while (($data = fgetcsv($handle, 1000, "t")) !== FALSE)

     {

       $import="INSERT into info(name,address,food, recipe) values('$data[0]','$data[1]','$data[2]', '$data[3]')";

       mysql_query($import) or die(mysql_error());

     }

     fclose($handle);

/* DB close info goes here */

     print "Import done";

One question though, will it always be the same format of 4 columns? I can test this in about an hour to make sure it works, but if you want, go ahead and give it a shot.

			mysql? if so look for a program called sqlyog you can import all sorts of data formats including csv comma delimited stuff.

			Haha wish it was mysql. Sorry should have specified the database is oracle 11g and the log files are from siebel and obiee. There could be more columns depending on the log file I pull. However they are pretty much all the same format of tab delimited. The related field columns also aren’t all exactly the same distance from the beginning of the line. For example the 2nd field may start 20 characters over every time except for a few records that are 21 characters over. This doesn’t seem to bother awk in unix.

			The script i posted would work for 4 columns. will they always have a header line? If so, you could either find some import software that oracle offers to do it, or write a script that checks the header lines and maybe files it accordingly? I have something like that working on one of our windoze servers here. It steps through all the files in a directory and finds the output that contains a certain header then imports into the respective table. Its been ages since i’ve messed with it.

cool thanks for the info. im using LFA for the siebel stuff but it doesn’t work for OBIEE. OBIEE is rough, most of it isn’t even documented properly

You might need the parameters that are after the link ("?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"). Looking at the 2 links, they both have that behind them. Might just be a deal of just appending " ?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" to the end of your link code they submit. See Below.

</table></body></html>

			Does changing &amp; to & fix it?

			I just noticed a difference in the 2 links.

The Database Link:

The Embeded Link:

There are a few ways you can tackle this.

1. Have your users submit the embeded link from Youtube. This would give you the exact Link. Not quite user friendly, but would work. This would work with your current code.
2. Have them submit the video number that comes after the v= in the address (i.e. r18AWC4j-EE). This would be ideal, easy to get for the user and you can just use the number to pull and insert into the embeded link in your code. [ideal]

$embed = '<object width="' . $videoWidth . '" height="' . $videoHeight . '">'.
                 '<param name="movie" value="'. $cell . '?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param>'.
                 '<param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param>'.
                 '<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>'.
                 '<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/' . $cell.  '?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" '.
                 'allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" '.
                 'width="' . $videoWidth . '" height="' . $videoHeight . '"></embed></object>';

3. Take what they submitted ripout what comes after the v= on the link and drop that into a new link. This is just a cheesy way to do it. It just finds the position of v= and gets everything after it(which would work unless there’s more crap behind it). Now this could be updated a little to look through the string and grab everything after the v= and stop when it gets to a "&" or "&amp;". That could work.

//Find Position of 'v='
$pos = strpos($cell, "v=");
//Pull just Video Number
$cell = substr($cell, $pos, strlen($cell)-$pos);
$embed = '<object width="' . $videoWidth . '" height="' . $videoHeight . '">'.
                 '<param name="movie" value="'. $cell . '?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param>'.
                 '<param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param>'.
                 '<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>'.
                 '<embed src="' . $cell. '?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" '.
                 'allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" '.
                 'width="' . $videoWidth . '" height="' . $videoHeight . '"></embed></object>';

I’d probably get the users to just submit the video number.

Sorry for the delayed reply. at work trying not to work I tested the last one with the links you had and it works, but it probably needs some work.

			no prob… thanks for taking a look at it. it may also be fucking up because its querying about 400 videos

			Ok this should work. This will take your current youtube links and strip out just the video number and put it in the link so it can be embedded.

Found a tutorial pagination class.php to walk through and got it working, but the videos stopped showing up which I narrowed down to being a class function being used in the query, but I’m over it for tonight!
I have a pretty good (like 90%) idea of how to do all this. But I want to learn to do it the proper way moving forward.

Are these developers attaching every function the elements from a javascript file? Any insight is appreciated!

			I’m a strong believer that all javascript should be developed unobtrusively. Benefits of this are pretty obvious–graceful degradation, and plenty of other benefits depending on the situation.

Coding javascript unobtrusively will allow separation between your presentation and your behavior, thus requiring your javascript code be held in an external file.

A major problem with javascript these days is really how people perceive it. It had very poor support of the DOM API , so developers were forced to utilize event handling by HTML events applied to elements. Today, that’s not so much of an issue, even in older browsers like IE6. There will be some quirks, but utilizing a framework would weed most of them out, and DOM has come quite a bit of ways.

			Do you know of anywhere to see samples of this done properly? Just looking for a base to get me going.

			What kingtoad said. Unubtrusive javascript is the best way to go.

You do this by setting up event listeners

So, onclick="function()" would be:

$(‘#target’).click(function() {
alert(‘Handler for .click() called.’);
});

Thats a specific example if you are using the jQuery library but the idea transfers.

If you wanted to do this using jQuery here is a simple example from the api docs.

I’d suggest before diving into a framework (like jQuery) to be able to write and manipulate objects and the DOM tree with DOM. This is a great book for individuals who are beginning javascript. It teaches javascript from a complete unobtrusive point of view. When finished with the book, you’ll be able to accomplish anything you need to in DOM. From there, you can graduate yourself to jQuery.

			Josh wrote a super small framework for handling some DOM functions, including attaching events. It’s worth checking out.

You’ll have to use the forum’s search feature to find it.

			in HTML..

<a href="http://www.google.com" class="colorbox">link</a>

in JavaScript (using jQuery and Colorbox)..

$(".colorbox").live("click", function() {
  $.colorbox({href:$(this).attr("href")});
  return false;
});

So if they don’t have Javascript, they have it disabled, the JS doesn’t load, etc, the link still works. If they do have Javascript functioning, it’ll instead open in a colorbox.

Josh wrote a super small framework for handling some DOM functions, including attaching events. It’s worth checking out.

I can’t find it…
