I’m trying to make a site for a local hobby group I’m involved with. I’ve used front page in the past because I need a visual editor. Can anyone recommend me a program like that or uses WYSIWYG. I was looking into xara and coffee cup, maybe even MS sharepoint.
even though I hate it, your best bet is to look into dreamweaver
Would you recommend Dreamweaver over Joomla for a beginner?
Just a small basic informational site.
I’d go with wordpress. Simple for beginners, easy to get the hang of and gets the job done.
ckeditor.com (I use that for all my basic-basic coding needs, have built a few simple sites using it.)

joomla is garbage
wordpress
Don’t try to design something yourself. It’ll look like garbage, and you’ll be left with unmanageable content.
Install WordPress and use a free theme

I played around with Dreamweaver a bit…I think it’s just a bit advanced for my skill level

I’ll take a look at wordpress.
Here is a site I did for a seperate club I used to belong to with Frontpage

This.
I work with a large wordpress site and there’s tons you can do with it. I have a personal site done in Joomla and I consistently call it Joolame. My other three personal sites I manage manually via notepad and ftp. Those are the quickest to add content to.

wtf
Joomla and Dreamweaver are two very different things, tech savvy.
edit: never person who mentions Joomla will be e-shot.
king road
I’ve helped a lot of fucking people around here.
Although, I don’t really post much here anymore because of the threads are uninteresting and mostly involve questions like "joomla or wordpress" or aff. marketing questions. TWL thrived when there were discussions about methods, theories, people coding up different ways to accomplish certain tasks, people optimizing other peoples code, people getting hacked for being douches, etc. All the people that made this forum interesting no longer post.
We should just rename this forum to "Make a quick buck online".
Out.
LOL HOW MUCH 2 B #1 ON GOOGLE???? |
I was just looking through old posts and it’s amazing how far some people have gone. Was looking at White Stormy having trouble aligning content in CSS . Now he’s bauce.

and I am wanting to bring it back to that
I’d be too embarrassed to go back and look at the shit I may have asked around here. I dunno. At the same time I also think I’ve kept up with the times well enough. A lot of it was just the web development community at large evolving.
trev is another one that’s grown a lot. Probably the only "SEO fag" that isn’t a faggot. I remember when he was all into e107. I remember Josh posting his uploader script and I mentioned in the thread that I saw some major security issues with it (it only did MIME and extension checking). A few months later, people start posting about how their sites are getting hacked and it’s because of his script. lol |
I know I have come a long way in the past couple of years and I was just talking to King about it a few weeks ago about that
wtf

My understanding is that Joomla and Dreamweaver are both programs used to develop a website.
Joomla is CMS .. in case you are unaware that’s short for "Content Management System".. , which is a system that holds all the content of your website and helps you manage it and design it into web pages.
While Dreamweaver is a WYSIWYG web design program.
I’m lost, really.
Where should I start if I want to begin building a website?
Like from the very beginning.
I want to start, but then look up all the options and I’m like "uhh wtf".. so many to choose from.

they are still 2 very different things
you want to learn, view code of sites and start watching videos and doing tutorials, learn html and then go from there

Can you make some recommendations on any good books to get started?
Or do I even need a book.. can I just learn on w3schools by following their free courses?
You’re probably better off learning from a book considering you’re already getting things like Joomla and Dreamweaver confused. Go to amazon.com and find books with good ratings. Most books have solidified the foundation of basic HTML/CSS, usability, and best practices. A lot of the information you’ll find on the web is dated and you wouldn’t know what is good practice or bad practice.

I was unaware CMS means "content management system"; thank you for educating me.
Furthermore, incorrect, they’re both not tools that are used to develop a website. Joomla is a CMS that manages content dynamically, and is likely beyond technical comprehension by someone of your experience as it involves experience in knowing how to develop websites to manipulate the data/framework/views that are part of it; Dreamweaver is a tool used to develop/design websites. Two very different things.
Start by learning HTML & CSS.
I’d also recommend changing your username to something less . . . ironic.
thanks for your help.
i have begun studying html and css on html dog. i was going with w3 schools, but then read bad reviews about that site, so switched over.
i still do not know the difference between dreamweaver and joomla, although i suspect this is something i will learn later on down the line in my web development studies.
