Left a start-up to do my own thing

Until a week ago I was the Director of Development at a start-up, left to do my own thing because I didn’t want to sign a 5 year non-compete and NDA in order to finalize our series A. I am starting my own business in the same space as the company I left and am trying to take as many clients as possible with me. Unfortunately I’m now remembering why I went to a start-up where the tech was already built, I’m clearly not a coder. Ugh.

Using the godaddy, 1 pager for now, it sucks. What’s the new hotness for people like me with no UX skills and no Ruby ability? Website is not vital to the business but it would be nice to be able to cookie people who come in with a referral code.

Nah, still have my shares though . I have plenty of runway to see this thing through. I can sign clients before the tech is ready, just anxious

godaddy 1 pager huh

well good luck with that

Yea it’s brutal. Have meetings with potential clients, and angels all week so I haven’t built much of anything yet. It’s embarrassing. Probably record time though between deciding to leave and having revenue at the new venture. Had to hold a contract because my corp wasn’t legally active yet.

with thinking like that go back to your old job

PS. godaddy site builder sucks, Hire someone

Thinking about paying someone to make a 5 page site with referral tracking. Any good ideas on where to go? 99designs for the UX and a coder?

Proper site with tracking will be built by the time I really need it. Can easily capitalize it. Just venting that what I have is brutal right now

5 page site you need UX?

Yea, if I’m going to do it may as well do it right. Have a real branding profile that ties back to business cards, future advertising, PR agency etc. Probably a 5-9 page site at the start but I would assume it will grow. Would eventually like to add a consumer backend so my clients can visualize their accounts but that is more in depth obviously

Going rate for a very level 1 starter site about $1,000?

We had a proper CTO at my last place

What is an angel? Like a venture capitalist?

angel investor. smaller investments and equity than traditional VC ops.

Mostly correct, Angels aren’t necessarily smaller though. Seen financing rounds closed with a VC leading the round putting in less than the largest Angel.

wordpress +

word, pick out theme you like, pay coder to change it how you want it

This thread is gold.

Why do we love watching train wrecks so much? Charlie Sheen anyone?
