Linux server with GUI?

I only know basic command line, so I would feel more comfortable with a GUI to at least get things setup. I currently have Ubuntu server (setup by previous employee) but want to start fresh due to a bunch of services / files that I have no clue about.

Which would be best? I just need the GUI mainly to setup and then can manage with command line / webmin.

Ubuntu server with gnome installed?
Fedora / RedHat?
CentOS?

The purpose is mainly LAMP and SMB.

Take a look at the Webmin packages for Debian (Ubuntu) they are kept up-to-date.

If you want to start from scratch I would suggest you read

It’s written for Debian Etch but will port over perfectly for both Debian Lenny and any flavour of Ubuntu you’ve got your hands on.

I run Centos with Webmin/Usermin to manage the server from a gui.

Phpmyadmin to manage the databases.

What do you mean by manage the setup? We do our initial install via pxe and an image.

I highly suggested toughing it out and doing it from command line from the beginning. It will pay off much more in the long run and then you can use any control panel you want.

I meant configure the initial install. I’m only partially proficient in the CLI, so I would feel more comfortable using a GUI / wizard so I don’t fuck shit up.

I highly recommend using sqlyog for this it is a great tool and makes any db work easier.
