Have you done any performance tweaking or tuning? Initial page load seemed pretty sluggish.

Edit: Just realised it’s nothing to do with Magento… your initial page is nearly 1MB total with images…

You probably want to halve that.

so, the theme itself was broken; and its funny how they upsell "professional installation" for an extra $50 every chance they can. (oh, and they’ve ignored my emails so far).

When I installed it, the header was about 900px to the right, the logos were jaggedy, none of the subpages actually worked, the modules for checkout didn’t work, etc.

(doing a google search showed that i wasn’t the only one to be suckered by them = )

fixed the CSS, re-did the images based off of the PSD, and got it to what it SHOULD have been. I was pissed

For being open source, Magento has one of the least helpful communities out there. There’s just a few elites that basically hold everyone’s hand, and other than that, everyone just keeps to themselves.

Eventually I’m going to try to make some noise. I intend to release free modules that do what some of the commercial ones do, especially some of the AJAX stuff. I figure things like that should shake up the community a bit, and hopefully it would help get my name out there too.

You can get themes that will work pretty well, granted you do enough changing like colors and images and a few adjustments to make them fit your site. But when you really get into it and are increasing conversions you will need to have a professional layout designed.

and not something india can do for $500 either.

I did a magento site earlier this year and that shit was fucking HORRIBLE

first thing that bothered me was the speed of the rotator… I’m a pretty fast reader and if that were sales text, i wouldn’t make it through the whole thing.

Maybe have it pause on mouse over or something?

I would charge a lot more than 100 to make it for somebody.
