so i want this guy to sell me a domain he’s not using

I thought of an awesome domain name that I want, checked, it was taken, and it was bought literally 1 week before I thought of it. Damn.

The domain has barely anything on it. There’s a WP "Welcome to WP, this is your first post" post there but that’s it. I emailed him and asked if he wanted to sell it but he said "no."

Fast forward two months, he still hasn’t done anything with it. No content, no backlinks, etc. Just the one "Welcome to WP" post.

I want it, but I don’t want to keep bugging him about it so he knows I want it and jacks up the price. I’ve never bought a domain from someone before. Any protips?

he already said no. either make him an offer or move on

how much do you offer for an unused domain? $20?

$20 is hardly worth his effort. 3 figures at least.

$100 is probably a decent starting point if it’s just sitting there and doesn’t have traffic, backlinks, etc

no traffic, no backlinks, no content. Literally sitting there. How is that worth $100?

It’s keywordkeyword.com which I want. keyword-keyword.com is available, but I want both, so people don’t get confused, and just redirect they hyphen one to the main one.

If I can’t think of a better name in the next few days maybe I will make him an offer.

Can I get private reg if I buy someone else’s domain?

keywordkeyword sounds a bit too long to be memorable. What is your aim for the site?

Because he bought it first. If you want it, you’re going to have to pay. He’s already said he doesn’t want to sell it – I doubt a puny $20 is going to tempt him to change his mind.

I’d sell my unused domains for $20. Beats letting them expire, which is what I did cuz no one offered me $20 for them

The point isn’t that it’s unused, it’s that he’s said he doesn’t want to sell it. That instantly means you’re going to have to pay over the odds. Who knows, he might have some project in mind that he doesn’t have time for yet?

"unused" means nothing in the domain game. I’ve seen vacant mansions on beach front property but doesn’t mean I can just offer $10 and get it . Domains are the reality of the internet and property values are based on a lot of things.

I get offers all the time for domains I have parked and most often I tell them it’s not enough. Last one I sold was only $2k but he seemed cool and it was a good price…he sent an offer for 1k, I said 2k and he said ok. And he ended up actually using it rather than just buying to invest (like I do sometimes lol). Check it out: WeGov.com

And that is smalltime. There are tons of domains being sold and bought for hundreds of thousands all year long…many in the millions too!

which unused domains do you have lol? Maybe I might just want to pick up a goldmine for $20

Sounds like he doesn’t really care to sell it. Maybe he just started making a wordpress blog and then quit and is saving it for later. Or he could be a first timer and started, and realized he didn’t like it an stopped.. Offer him $100, and see what that does.

you sound like this guy who was begging to buy one of my domains, he offered me $10 to start off, a few months later he offered me $15, I told him when he was serious to send me a real offer, he told me it was a real offer at $15 and he was telling me some of the shit you said

I was getting some of his traffic, so I through ads up on it, and sat on the site for a few years and finally let it go after he killed off his site

At least that is better than that silly "school project" scam some of those loser try to use. Surprising how many times I have heard that one. Before I would just ignore it or tell them to f off. Now I usually string them along for a week or two making them think they talked me into it then surprise them with a free lesson in commerce…you know, since they are "students" lol.

lol.

I had someone offer who wanted to buy up a domain I didnt really use.

his offer?

"You have 3 weeks left before it expires. I’ll give you the prorated amount that left if you sell me the domain"

I registered it for $10 a year

he was offering 75 cents for it

just to piss him off I renewed that bitch for 5 more years

lol.

To many people, they believe their domains are worth a lot more.

I’ve looked up dozens of domains that I want and they have been all taken… but with blank pages.
People buy domains to sell them in the future… I’ve bought about 2 dozen last year just to maybe make some money one day off them.

I don’t have anywhere near $1000 to be paying for a domain if the guy doeant want to sell it tp me for a low price I can just come up with a different domain name to use.

How do you guys get domains to sell for thousands like that? Do you plan it that way or do people just randomly make you offers?

try offering 100 or so, $20 is laughable and not really worth anyone’s hassle to see it for

I haven’t sold any of mine yet but they were going to be sold with designs… which I have yet to finish.

There are plenty of websites where people buy and sell domains on.

bob.com is going for $1,000,000 right now

both. Keyword domains are valuable and there are only so many realistic ways to make domains for every specific word/phrase out there. So an obviously limited supply of what people would want.

There are whole forums (quite a few actually) set up for the trade and sale of domains and a bunch of major aftermarkets and auction houses that sell them. It’s a pretty big market actually.

If you haven’t heard of any of this you should look into it as you will probably be pretty surprised at how high many of the big names go for.

I know some of them go for a lot, I just figured that it was one of those things like penny stocks where 1000s of people try to get in on the action and only like a few actually make any money doing it

Every domain name I buy has whois protection. Can you still sell them with private reg? How can you prove ownership? I’ve always wondered that.

I know three letter domains go for a lot, too.

This one isn’t really that big of a deal. It was a name I thought of for one of my businesses. It was an awesome name, but it’s not really imperative that I get it

Cliffs on making money from domain name sales? Is it just:

– Buy domain name with cool keywords
– Auction it on Sedo
– ???
– Profit?

Or is it:

– Buy domain name
– Hope that someone makes you an offer
– Profit?

There is no real cliffs besides short and very specific generic items/products/services can be pretty valuable. Just depends on that specific market. For example, diapers.com is a very specific generic domain that is the one domain that any diaper seller should have. I don’t know who owns it but if huggies or pampers dont then they are dumb. Same goes for any brand and the generic product they may sell. The value in a domain like that, of a diaper seller/manufacturer is only limited to how much they can make not only in direct sells with their brand but also in funneling traffic to their own product.

How many people do you think, when looking up car insurance online, just type in carinsurance.com assuming that is the search they want? Since most of the internet is comprised of newer surfers that happens a LOT. Any car insurance sellers would get a huge amount of very targeted interested buyers if they had that domain.

That’s just the basics as there are other reasons domains can be worth money but it basically boils down to a pretty limited supply of quality domains (at least .com) and the demand for that property always going up.

Keyword domains can also be important for SEO, as I am sure you already know . Much easier to rank a site with a specific exact match keyword domain!

As far as making money off it, it’s just like anything else…buy low, sell high lol. The best profit margin is obviously to just register a domain for yourself for $10 and then sell it for as much as you can. Though it can be harder to find salable domains like that than it may seem. But if you watch domain drop list, have an idea what is selling in the market and are smart (or lucky) you can usually sell a decent amount, even for small profits waiting for that one big one. I mean the investment is pretty low and you have a whole year to make a sale of more than $10 to make a profit. But best to see what is already selling to get an idea. Even places like digitalpoint and ebay have domain sales lol.

And of course, in the end, a domain name is worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. That may end up being the $10 or so you registered it for or it may be some silly rich dude starting a company that has his heart set on your silly brandable domain name.
