Web designers: what would you charge to do the following

Please give quotes for these numbered tasks separately:

1) revamping an online magazine website:
– archiving 100s of old articles
– changing to a new CMS since the way it currently exists is hand coded html with some Flash menus and shit
– handling design and everything
– implementing Adsense
– managing Google Analytics

2) updating a 7 year old phpBB forum to whatever the new hotness in forums is

3) creating a wap version of the forum, such as wap.offtopic.com (is this pretty easy and built into forum software or is there a lot of work involved?)

1 is the site all HTML….indexing could be a bitch that needs to be outsourced

The guy who asked me is pretty adamant about not having anything outsourced. I guess the last few people he hired to redo his site just kept outsourcing and outsourcing and outsourcing and nothing ever got done, and he’s pretty pissed

$2-3,000, That’s a lot of work.

2) updating a 7 year old phpBB forum to whatever the new hotness in forums is

$4-600 Transfer to vBulletin most likely, heard it’s easy, heard it’s a bitch.

3) creating a wap version of the forum, such as wap.offtopic.com (is this pretty easy and built into forum software or is there a lot of work involved?)

$400 I’m pretty sure this can be done with no much work involved.

I am just talking having some fillipino transfer the HTML content into posts in wp. Id hate to stand cut hundreds of HTML pages to extract the content plus it depends how well coded it was before.

1) $1500 time consuming.

2-3) Ive done phpbb to vbulletin it was a pain in the ass $500 + vbulletin licence.

2. Update to the latest PHPBB, it’s free and will upgrade with no hassle

3. Get WAP addon for PHPBB and use auto installer

Youve manage to update the index page and archive pages without any help of using database + php?

Well obviously don’t do it by hand lol. Write a script.

write a script that will do the archiving of the 100 articles

Agreed.

People that ride vBulletin’s nuts are fucking retarded. Unless (a) you make a enough money from other parts of your site easily subsidize the cost of the license, or (b) your forum itself is a primary source of revenue (see: OffTopic.com), vBulletin is a moronic business decision.

phpBB 3 has had no security vulnerabilities since it was released. It’s a solid platform. phpBB 4 is being built on Symphony 2, which should make it scale very well. If you want to migrate away from phpBB, however, then stick with free forums. Go with myBB if you want your hand to be held (and it uses the vB ACP, so that should be useful for the vB leg humpers). Go with PunBB if you just want a skeleton to build on.

There’s also Drupal, WordPress, and other CMSes that have forum plugins, which is also an option worth considering if the rest of your site is going to be built on one such CMS.

Every time you post I stare at your av for a while.

I don’t know anything about forums. Is vBulletin expensive?

If you have an old ass version of phpBB from like 2002 is it fairly straightforward to copy all the old threads/posts to a new forum?

I recently upgraded a phpbb2.x to 3.0 all the threads, users and forums ported over perfectly. Just use the upgrade option, no need to export/import and all that, it does it for you.
