I’ve done it once before, loved the traffic, great way to promote a site.. But a part of me still thinks it’s a bad idea.. Had one advertiser that was angry because someone click-bombed their ads.. Other than that, add in domain privacy, what else would there be to cover?
I used to get a decent amount of traffic from a site I made for OT. ould I advertise? fuck no. You could get way more hits for cheaper on other sites.
Money doesn’t really matter.. The word of mouth from the site ftw. Plus I could make that $ back easily enough.

I have known a few others get their shit ruined after advertising on here because they pissed off some users. To me it is not worth it, it reminds me of the old adage, don’t shit where you eat

Unless it’s something obviously connected to you, or you post about it, how would anyone even know it was you? Not sure what you want to advertise or how obvious it would be you but I would think a majority of users who even see the ads are not the same people that are known regulars. Most of them have subs=no ads or use adblockers lol. Would mostly be advertising to the noobs, nosubs and lurkers.
Well it’s a site/domain I ended up buying from another "disliked" OTer. Site has new ownership (me), but worried about it’s past. Even if I make a throw away account people are still going to be like "it’s that old guy!", "omg it’s him", etc. Just want to run it from my account to avoid all of that drama… I’ll prob run it sometime soon here.

In all seriousness, I think back to that toppppp.com guy who was paying for stickies in the main and whatnot, i.e., paying for advertising. You see, this was right around the holiday season and toppppp.com was a site that shows the highest rated products on Amazon from an assortment of categories (something like 130+ products in total). The idea being that you go to his thread and check out these products as possible gift ideas. When you buy one, he gets his Amazon affiliate credit, which is how he makes his money.
Imagine someone clicks his thread, maybe clicks a product or two. Then returns to the thread to discuss whether or not they want to buy that Fasta Pasta for only $20. Well, returning to the thread to discuss the product just cost that guy his revenue. You see, unbeknownst to the advertiser (and the participants in the thread, of course) who thought he was getting a fair deal, there was this invisible stuffed cookie in the footer of OT that was resetting the affiliate tag and depriving this advertiser of his revenue. So now this guy is paying for advertising on OT, but he’s getting a raw deal because one of his direct competitors is getting a portion of the sales from traffic that he generated. It’s not just that he’s losing out on revenue, but he’s giving that revenue to a competitor. It’s a real kick in the balls. Now imagine that the staff gets told about this problem a month later. Imagine that a thread about it is created in the Front Desk and staff members assure everyone that Fazle is aware of the "bug" and is fixing it. Imagine that the whole thing gets swept under the rug. It isn’t until six months later when someone takes the time to explain to the people in the main forum what’s going on that anything is actually done. Sorry, but that’s a deal breaker for me. I got nothing but love for OT as far as the community is concerned. But when it comes to business, I’d have to politely turn down any offers. |
