My First WP Site – Critiques

I haven’t designed a web site for over a decade but am hoping to spend the next few years traveling and hopefully collect some income through Ads/Amazon Affiliates/Donations.

I’ve bought a few domains and have built the first site which will be a Stock Trading Blog focused on Canadian Securities.

I installed WP, used the free Suffusion theme, and came up with this.

So far there are just some test posts on there but I’m looking for some critiques / criticisms that I can work on.

While I’m familiar with setting things up in Suffusion / Word Press, I’m going to set-up a second site focused on traveling. Basically, I’d like to use the same basic format / layout but obviously some different widgets to replace the stock quotes.

I’ve signed up for Amazon Associates and Google AdSense and am just waiting for my account approvals to go through before I set that up and then begin blogging / marketing.

Thanks in Advance!

Design seems fine.

Place ads in your sidebar. Also in-between post summaries on your home page.

Your big problem is content and traffic. Just running a feed w/ stock prices isn’t going to attract dick.

Thanks.

I know content is the big seller for gaining traffic, and it shouldn’t be a problem – I have loads of material. I just wanted to build the framework for a couple of sites while I know what I’m doing (familiar = faster, more efficient) and then I’ll start posting the content. I’d like to get my bookstore & ads up as well (still waiting for my AdSense account approval).

I’d also read a lot about SEO for how categories / post titles / slugs are named so I wanted to make sure that stuff was correct before moving forward (I understand it’s difficult to change a slug after the fact).

Any other critiques are appreciated…

The other site is going to be a travel site

You could make a business forum for others to post on. I know a lot of people in this business and don’t have a real forum to post on. I could mod and anything you needed help with.

Yea, forums will come down the line, though probably just for the travel site. There are hundreds of stock forums around.

I have a grander "business" idea but that probably won’t happen until next year. These sites are really just projects to familiarize myself with the blogging, SEO, site design etc.

Makes my eyes hurt really bad. Design is pretty horrible. , Functional but just way to much going on, and the green is over the top.

Suggestions for improvements? What makes the eyes hurt?

Do you think a Darker Green background and light gray post background would be better or…?

Yeah, this site is straining my eyes.

Way too much negative space going on… At first glance there looks to be a giant blob of white on the site.

The green background is too rich, granted it may be dark… Try to desaturate the color a bit.

Overall, your contrast is very inconsistent. You have deep contrast with the background, body and link colors, but then your text is low contrast. That’s really straining my eyes.

Yeah, green site is a blast of white in this dark room. needs one more color like gray to help calm it down a bit. don’t really have an original comment here just agreed

red site is not bad like this and i like the use of red. it is looking extremely simple atm and needs a lot more pizzazz at the top bar system could use improvement and maybe remove sidebars. of course this site hasent had much work done on it yet, just some thoughts about the current state.

For starters, the logo is an abortion, I’d get that professionally designed (I can put me hand up

I think go a different shade of green if you are set on green, but studies show blue is most calming and easy on the eye.

Thanks for all the comments. I’ll work with the colours a bit and play with some grays instead of the white background. Also darken the text a bit (it’s black text, but perhaps bold it or a different font. I should have posted up a paragraph in the posts. If you look at the "About" page I don’t think it looks so bad because there is less negative space.

I will also work on the logo further.

I think people are missing the point of the site being Green – Stock Trading = Money + Markets up – colour associated with money and markets up? Green

Would you really want to go to a Stock Trading site that is Red (losses)?

Thanks for all the critiques…I’ll see what I can do to improve it!

Wow, also just switched monitors. I can understand what everyone was saying about the colours now. Obviously the monitor I was using was quite desaturated!! Something to keep in mind for other designers…make sure your monitor’s colours are decent!

they look like plain wordpress sites. Did you do anything to the themes? they look stock, nothing fancy. Sites are boring, nothing memorable or making me want to come back

I don’t want a ‘fancy’ site…just something clean. The hope is that the content is what will make people want to come back but before I get going with that I wanted to make sure it looked ok.

I got critiqued on the colours and logos so I made some changes to that and that’s basically all I was looking for.

there you go, looks a great deal better now, best of luck

Two things to think about:

1) How is your site going to set itself apart from the 11ty other trading sites out there?

2) You are in one of the most competitive niches online. How are you going to get traffic?

Definitely good points. Keys are – I will focus 100% on Canadian Stocks (not a lot of Canadian trading sites available out there without subscription) and hopefully I’m good at what I do and gain followers through good picks. There are some very good sites such as EquityClock.com and TimingtheMarket.ca that look at the overall market, but don’t provide a lot of research and analysis into specific companies – I’m hoping to get some traffic from them.

There are a ton of msg boards where people pump penny stocks and publicize picks with 2 line quotes. I’m hoping to analyze a stock from a technical and financial basis every day (something I do every day now anyways, just haven’t put it into content format).

I’ve got a pretty good network now and have been sending out e-mail picks for quite some time in an informal newsletter to ~200 colleagues. I’m hoping that if I get it going in web form the word will spread.

We’ll see though…this is my first time and sort of a trial site. I have another idea which will be much more complex so this is all about learning about how it’s done.

I appreciate everyone’s input – I’ve learned a lot off of this forum since it was created!

you don’t need to be fancy, but they are basic wordpress templates, you did nothing to set it apart from the thousands of other stock sites, 2 minutes after people leave your site, they will not remember it or want to come back

The two sites that I want to appeal to the audiences of are and – they’re not great layouts, but they’ve got great information so I read both almost daily.

What would you suggest to spice it up?

I haven’t read most of the comments since my last comment, but I checked the site again and it is definitely easier to look at now.

It just so happened I had to help my friend out with one of his clients and this is their site. They used green as well.

^ Thanks! I wish I’d seen that before as I like the colours used on the site, but I’m happy with where things are at on TSXTrader for now. Time to start getting content up and then seeking traffic.

Got a couple of cool Amazon Plug-Ins going yesterday which should work well for my book reviews.

both of them are more appealing than your sites

content is king, so you gotta make sure you have shit people want, but you can have the best info, if your site looks like shit or easily forgettable, people will not come back

so you need great content and a better look

I’ve already covered the content numerous times. I’m getting the templates set before I start adding content. Is that so hard to understand?

As far as the look, what do you suggest to make the look better? I’d appreciate some more specific critiques as others provided so I can work towards making them better.

Saying I need a better look isn’t exactly helpful…

just because you have content does not mean it is good content, you need good content for them to come back

and I would scrap the templates and start over and use something else, I am not going to hold your hand and tell you everything that is wrong with it

and if your content is anything like the look of the site, you will not have that much of recurring traffic

Well, you’re officially a prick. I posted the site up for critiques because I have never build a word press site before and I wanted tips, pointers, and constructive criticism on design, SEO etc. What does building a wordpress site have to do with a person’s knowledge of stocks, investing or ability to write good content? Ever think that while you were apparently designing shit, I have been trading very successfully and becoming extremely knowledgeable about the subject?

Whatever…thanks to all of you who gave constructive tips and got me this far. I’ll just have to learn through trial and error and further reading, just as everyone else has done at some point….oh, except for Pepsi who fell out of the womb with perfect .php coding skills…dude, your mother must be so proud…
